The well-traveled Abra Moore was a founding member of Poi Dog Pondering. After leaving that critically acclaimed band, Moore went the solo route with Sing, and succeeded in creating an album that is sure to please old fans and new ones alike. Musically, Sing is quite organic, drawing on a feel that is perceptibly Southwestern. Moore is a clever lyricist, and her honest insights, combined with a girlish voice that is similar to Rickie Lee Jones', draw in the listener. The lyrics often show vulnerability, as on the engaging "I Look Around," the quietly acoustic "Some Kind of Change," and the lovely ballad "Somebody That Cares." Moore never descends into self-pity, though, and she balances things out with the tentative optimism of "Throw a Penny" and the harmonica-laced "Half Step and Tumble." A gorgeous, literate record that makes a connection to both the heart and the head.
