After taking the world by storm with 1980's Kings of the Wild Frontier, Adam & The Ants refused to repeat themselves, pushing into new areas with Prince Charming. Though the band still employed some of the same sonic devices (thundering, African-influenced double-drummer rhythms on the hit "Stand and Deliver," Marco Pirroni's guitar riffs, spaghetti western meets glam rock riffs), there's all manner of experimentation going on. The horns and orchestration of "Scorpios" boast a Latin feel; "Ant Rap" finds Adam and the boys channeling their inner Sugarhill Gang; "Prince Charming" (an anthem in defense of dandies) can only be described as flamenco-rock. Amid all the stylistic explorations, Adam went further afield with his lyrics, too; "Picasso Visita el Planeta de los Simios" (Picasso Visits the Planet of the Apes) is downright absurdist, while "S.E.X" somehow manages to champion virginity and promiscuity simultaneously. Prince Charming wasn't as big of a smash as its predecessor, but it showed that the Ants were much more than a one-shot affair.
