Upon the release of Decemberunderground in April 2006, lead singer Davey Havok announced that the album’s title refers to “a time and a place. It is where the cold can huddle together in darkness and isolation.” While the description was intentionally cryptic, it's an accurate way of describing the album's thematic and sonic environment. The lyrics reprise familiar themes of distress and despair, and the music can feel as harsh as a winter wind. Yet AFI always provides a feeling of electrified fellowship. It’s an ethos reflected in the shout-along choruses of “Kill Caustic,” “Miss Murder," and “Love Like Winter.” The band’s overarching message is that while anguish and anger are each individual’s unavoidable fate, these songs will provide a gathering space for an unseen legion of likeminded sufferers. As much as Decemberunderground is preoccupied with themes of darkness, AFI refuses to wallow. Instead it embodies transcendence, whether in the tribal rhythms of “Prelude 12/21” or the soaring-yet-vulnerable performances of Havok, whose presence gives even the heaviest songs a pair of mile-long wings.
