Until 2008, tenor Andrea Bocelli alternated between operatic and classical crossover/adult pop albums. Incanto expands his repertoire significantly. Comprised of Neapolitan songs from the mid-19th century through the 20th century, it’s the pop music of an earlier era, previously recorded by the likes of Enrico Caruso. (It’s also the soundtrack to much of the Tuscan native’s own childhood.) “Un Amore Cosi Grande” is an ideal showcase for Bocelli's charismatic voice, with Veronica Berti‘s uplifting soprano and Fausto Mesolella’s delicate classical guitar providing deft accompaniment. There’s a palpable joy to “Mamma” in both his delivery and in the horn- and woodwind-infused orchestral arrangement. Perry Como had a hit with “Because” in 1947; Bocelli's interpretation is grander and more emotive. For the enchanting “Era De Maggio,” he has an ideal duet partner in mezzo-soprano Anna Bonitatibus, while “Non Ti Scordar Di Me” evokes Naples with an angelic-sounding assist from the Italian Swiss Radio Choir.
