Angela Bofill had only recently graduated the Manhattan School of Music and begun to make a living in the clubs of New York City when she was discovered by jazz composer Dave Grusin, who quickly ushered her into the studio to record 1978’s Angie. The Bronx-born singer’s debut album shows exactly why she's equally beloved by the Coltrane crowd and the Soul Train crowd. “Under the Moon and Over the Sky,” “Baby, I Need Your Love,” and “The Only Thing I Could Wish For” are as lush and richly orchestrated as film scores—at this point, Grusin was in the midst of a successful career as a movie composer. And yet they have the flowing, funky choreography of R&B. Bofill was mature well beyond her 23 years; on the hit ballad “This Time I’ll Be Sweeter,” she's not only thoughtful and poised but also self-assured. She was working with some of the most accomplished musicians in the business, but her voice never comes off as an accessory. At every moment, she's fully integrated in the music and often leads the band as if twirling a silk scarf through the air behind her.
