After being discovered by Richie Havens in Woodstock, N.Y., Benny Mardones hooked up with The Rolling Stones' former manager/producer, Andrew Loog Oldham, for his debut album, Thank God for Girls, which went nowhere due to the label going bankrupt. One track from that album, "Hold Me Down," was re-recorded for the follow-up album, the Barry Mraz–produced Never Run Never Hide. This set also includes Mardone's No. 11 Billboard hit single "Into the Night," a tune that would chart a second time nine years later. Another track, "American Bandstand," paid tribute to Dick Clark and was performed on the show of the same name. Working with David Leigh Byron and Robert Tepper, Mardones wrote an album that brilliantly captures the sound of FM-radio-ready rock, circa 1979-1980, portending the coming power ballads and slick-but-raunchy rock 'n' roll of the '80s.
