While Black Sabbath’s self-titled debut album is the purest expression of the band’s music, the follow-up, Paranoid—released just months later—features several of Sabbath's best and most loved songs. The opener, “War Pigs”—a song critical of the Vietnam War—had been intended as the title track, but the record label didn't want the controversy. "Paranoid" was made the title track based on its strength; it was the lead-off single and (along with “War Pigs” and “Iron Man”) became a classic song with riffs for emerging electric guitarists everywhere. “Planet Caravan” and “Rat Salad” each provide a few moments of relief on their respective album “sides.” The second side, with “Electric Funeral,” “Hand of Doom,” and “Fairies Wear Boots,” is nearly as classic as the first side. Despite initial lukewarm to nasty reviews, Paranoid has since been credited among the greatest albums of all time from magazines such as Rolling Stone, Guitar World, Kerrang!, Q, and Vibe, among many.
