Although Seventh Star is for all intents and purposes Tony Iommi's first solo album, pressure from management forced the awkward billing of “Black Sabbath Featuring Tony Iommi.” Rather than motivate sales, this confusion only caused needless damage to the album’s reception. While it's obviously not a true Black Sabbath album, Seventh Star bears Iommi’s unmistakable imprint. Whether the band is playing the speed metal of “Turn to Stone (Eye of the Storm)” or the downtuned blues of “Heart Like a Wheel,” Iommi’s guitar sound had more heart, more grit, and more otherworldly force than anyone else in metal at the time.
