The enduring brother-sister duo of Bruce and Erica Driscoll—who changed their group name from Astaire to Blondfire mid-tour, to avoid legal hassles with Fred Astaire’s estate—make sugar-sweet electronic-influenced pop music on their charming self-produced second album, Young Heart. Helped along by the mixing skills of Wally Gagel (whose résumé includes Muse, Folk Implosion, and Best Coast), the album is bright and breezy, light and lush. It's packed with 11 songs that clock in at three and a half minutes each, plus “We Are One,” which daringly closes in on the five-minute mark. This deliberate attempt to keep things concise pays off. The album reels off one inspired potential single after another, from the title track and “Where the Kids Are” to “Hide and Seek,” the call and response of “Dear in Your Headlights,” and the Brazilian-tinted “The Only Ones.” The Brazilian influence is no accident; the Driscolls’ mother is a classically trained Brazilian pianist who exposed the children to bossa novas and music lessons. It paid off; Bruce and Erica know how to craft a catchy tune.
