Released in 1988, By All Means Necessary retained the sonic intensity that had propelled the early BDP singles, but KRS expanded his vision of inner-city realities to include messages of African-American unity and betterment. Give KRS credit. This adjustment took a lot of guts, and it paid off. The rapper was better suited to being a community leader—a secular preacher, really—than he was a gangster. His presence on the mic was as large as his physical presence (the 6’4” KRS was built like a football player), and many of these songs focus on extinguishing any idea that he could be underestimated. Together these 10 songs form a thunderous campaign soundtrack.
