If In God We Trust is the sharp detonation of an M-80, then Everything Is Everything is the slow boil of a stove pot. From the celebratory atmosphere of One For All to the raw ferocity of In God We Trust, Brand Nubian had always been an exterior group, and their third album shows them going interior for the first time. The album is sleek and smoky and subterranean, with Sadat X and Lord Jamar choosing to lay back in the cut where they used to ride it from the top. “Sweatin Bullets,” “Straight Off da Head” and “Down for the Real” are definitive portrayals of New York City rap culture circa 1994 — elegant and evil, and engulfed in a perpetual cloud of marijuana smoke. Despite the group’s reclined posture, Sadat and Jamar remain paragons of intensity, and not just on the uptempo roughneck beats of “Word Is Bond” and “Alladat.” In “Lick Dem Muthaph@?as” the pair portray assassins, equally calm and ruthless: “I got you suckin’ at the chrome like a nipple,” intones Jamar, “The only way your ass is goin’ home is as a cripple.”
