Ex–Stray Cats guitarist Brian Setzer has proved to be anything but a flash-in-the-pan oldies act. He's a rightfully revered guitarist who positively slays in the rockabilly style. One listen to the virtuosity and energy driving “Rockabilly Blues” should be enough to make many aspiring musicians put their guitars back in their cases. These 12 originals are worthy additions to the rockabilly canon, whether it be the car enthusiast driving “I Should’a Had a V-8,” the Flatfoot Sam who still lives for the stylin’ of a nightlife that revolves around the purity of “Vinyl Records,” or the guy who realizes “Nothin’ Is a Sure Thing” to a menacing guitar groove. Even a slower tune like “The Girl with the Blues in Her Eyes” features all the necessary intensity to excel as a top-notch ballad (calling Paul McCartney?). Recorded in Nashville by producer Peter Collins, Rockabilly Riot! features Setzer backed by just three musicians—bassist Mark Winchester, drummer Noah Levy, and pianist Kevin McKendree—and the quartet show that a small, talented band is still the best way to rock ’n’ roll.
