He turned 69 in 2014, but Bryan Ferry prefers dabbling in the sounds not of his youth but of his middle age. If Avonmore needs a point of comparison, it starts with Roxy Music’s final album (1982’s Avalon) and continues through Ferry’s ’80s solo output, in that era when meticulous rhythms, layers of synths, and sophisticated styles were first in style. Closing the album with Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns” and Robert Palmer’s “Johnny & Mary” modify the sting of somber recollection. But whether it’s the Johnny Marr cowrite “Soldier of Fortune” or the pensive “Lost,” Ferry is best when he bares his grey side.
