Encased in an icy reverb that makes every note and every instrument sound as if it’s coming from the other side of the mountain, Chris Garneau’s Winter Games is a tightly compressed collection of songs about a variety of sad, tragic topics that have been the currency for artists from The Cure and American Music Club to Red House Painters and Talk Talk for decades. The dense cadences build from track to track, with “Winter Song 2” and “The Whore in Yourself” poking out with arrangements a bit wilder than most, until “Catherine” and “Switzerland” put an end to the sentence with long, drawn-out humming chords and a farewell sense that was present since the opening words of “Our Man.” Not everyone will enjoy or comprehend this singular focus on the darkness in life (the press materials swear there’s a silver lining), but for fans of the solemn night, the corresponding poetry is here.
