Cindy Bullens has never been a major star. She received a GRAMMY nomination for her singing in Grease, but her own work has largely been heard only by a cult audience who seek her out and other industry professionals who rely on her for songs. (The Dixie Chicks covered her tune “Whistles and Bells”). In 2010, she’s decided to run for the state Senate in Maine and to release this album of tunes that firmly establish her as an Americana artist with a dangerous pulse. Unlike many of her contemporaries who have slowed down over the years in order to accommodate their reflective sides, Bullens can do that, and does, with the stirring, mid-tempo “Labor of Love” (covered by Radney Foster) and the gorgeous ballad “All My Angels.” But she also rocks up a mean streak with “Love Gone Good,” the husky blues of “Can’t Stop This Train” and the full-on blast of “In a Perfect World.” “I Didn’t Know” throws her into the juke joints. Bullens deserves to be heard.
