The fourth and final installment of the group's "Nomad Series," The Wilderness features songs written by Michael Timmins at a rural cottage during an Ontario winter. Cowboy Junkies have always excelled at material that seems placid at the surface but has an agitated engine firing underneath. Timmins is an existential songwriter, and the songs here deal with questions of age and even parenthood. His sister Margo Timmins delivers the songs with her trademark restraint. Her vocals manage to say more with a well-turned phrase than those of singers who chase notes through hoops. Her authority turns "We Are the Selfish Ones" from a possibility into a surety. The comforting slowness of "Angels in the Wilderness" lets each note be wrung out for maximum beauty. "Damaged from the Start" evokes a wearying wind. By the time the album reaches "F**k, I Hate the Cold," it's with a well-deserved laugh. Cowboy Junkies make music that's stirring in its solemnity, but their sense of humor and humanity ensures that things never get too precious. These are major song stylists working at top capacity.
