The latest in a long line of Professors from Jamaica, Da Professor was born and raised in Kingston but has also lived in New York and Florida. The Laboratory is his debut album, with 14 tracks of pure reggae overflowing with ear-tickling riddims and uplifting lyrics. It’s produced by Don Corleon (Donovan Bennett), who’s worked with Vybez Kartel, Pressure, and Jah Cure, among many others. We get a few great collaborations (Protoje, J Boog, and Ken Boothe), but for the most part it's all Da Professor doing his thing over an abundance of strong horn arrangements, seductively jumpy beats, deep bass bumps, and reverb-heavy keyboards and guitars. A quality mix of love songs and party jams, it's an impressive, feel-good album from start to finish, never getting bogged down by overt politics or shoot-‘em-up gangsterisms. There's not a weak track here: “Treat U Right,” “Skanking and Rocking,” “Fi Her Type,” and “By Her Side” are standouts.
