Even after he successfully expanded his range, the best way to hear Anthony David is still on his own, accompanied only by his acoustic guitar. That’s exactly what you get on The Setup, which documents a live set at the Sambuca Jazz Café in the singer’s hometown of Atlanta. There's something totally naturalistic about David’s style that makes him stand out in a world of R&B bluster. It’s not a matter of being part of something vintage or “neo-soul”; it’s simply that when he sings, he sounds like a real person, not an untouchable superstar. In today’s R&B landscape, it’s rare to find a singer who plays guitar. But with David, his singing and his playing are inextricably linked: two parts of the same voice. While it’s nice to hear stripped-down versions of formerly jacked-up club songs like “Let Me In,” "Girlfriend,” and “Body Language,” the performances that return the artist to his roots are “Kinfolk/Georgia Peach” and “Cold Turkey.” One is David’s tribute to ATL hip-hop; the other's a gorgeously sparse fusion of soul and blues. Neither is to be missed.
