Milk Man is a 2004 album from Deerhoof which showed just how far into the indie-pop world they could travel while still retaining the art/noise assault the typified so much of their early work. The opening track explores this terrain with a mixture of violent aggression and pop so pure and sweet it's practically covered in syrup. Filled with references to idyllic states of mind with occasional references to a psychotic milk man, this is the band exploding with invention and energy. Drummer Greg Saunier switches gears with ease on the indie skronk instrumental ""Rainbow Silhouette of the Milky Rain" while guitarists Chris Cohen and John Dieterich create some kind of harmonics-heavy take on African highlife. Vocalist Satomi Matsuzaki seals the package with her vocal delivery, creating a knowing narrative of pure simplicity ("Dog on the Sidewalk" is about just that) which the band counter with fractured rhythms and bursts of flaming guitar noise.
