Three years after Delorean's excellent Subiza, 2013’s Apar dances along as if no time at all had passed. The Barcelona-based electro-pop group long ago mastered the art of bridging gaps between the ambient, dance, techno, and indie dreampop worlds with tracks that stood up as songs regardless of the approach. There’s no reason to strip down songs such as “Spirit” and “Still You,” but you could, and that’s where the group's inner strength lies. “Destitute Time” opens with the call of an angel, which recurs in strategic intervals as the song settles down into an ‘80s-style alternative dance rock tune. “Unhold” features vocals by Caroline Polachek of Chairlift for a distinct female presence, while most tunes here are held in check by frontman Ekhi Lopetegi. Delorean's sound here has been given a sleek overhaul, fitting for a group that’s grown up alongside this technology. Yet it's done so by working toward using more live instrumentation and less heavily computerized, pre-figured algorithms. Such is Delorean's peculiar magic.
