Here, Echo & The Bunnymen gracefully commandeer their songs with more power than ever, and nary a one “rocks.” With the musical melodrama of their splendid Ocean Rain–era mid-'80s heyday tempered, the songs here give singer Ian McCulloch (now in his late 30s) more space to croon of love, loss, and wide-open futures rising from stumble-down pasts. His voice isn’t as clear and ringing in the upper reaches as it once was; the midrange is hashed up a bit too, and countless cigarettes butts litter the lower tones. But that’s all beautiful, song-appropriate stuff. His voice has grown into the man. Sadness crests on “History Chimes” and is handily released on the should’ve-been-a-hit “Lost on You.” The title song and “Rust” find the band’s deceptively simple, melancholic verses rising to cinematic proportions by the chorus, while “Baby Rain,” “Fools Like Us,” and “Get in the Car” (featuring The Fun Lovin’ Criminals) lift and simmer, stoked as much by The London Metropolitan Orchestra as by guitarist Will Sergeant’s raga-glorious strums and drones.
