By 1994, Elvis Costello had done it all. He’d recorded in every genre he’d imagined, including a foray into the classical world with his previous release The Juliet Letters. So, coming full circle, he re-employed the Attractions for the first time since 1986’s Blood and Chocolate, (though old-time producer Nick Lowe and Costello often take the bass role from Bruce Thomas). Mitchell Froom adds his fussier production touches, but there’s no obscuring the intensity of “Kinder Murder” or “13 Steps Lead Down.” The My Aim is True simplicity of “Sulky Girl” with its striking signature riff is welcomed, as is the relative calm that allows the spooky organ of “Clown Strike” to cast its spell above the heavy stereo mix. However, where the original Attractions would often bash out an arrangement built on sheer guts and momentum, this album often prefers the more ornate touches of their work on Armed Forces or Trust to make its point, as “This Is Hell” piles on the layers of sound, while “20% Amnesia” showers on the quirky horns and vocal counterpoints.
