The first Fairport Convention album introduced a very different band from the one Fairport fans would soon come to know. Not only did they have a different frontwoman—Judy Dyble, later of Trader Horne, filled the role before Sandy Denny arrived—the feel is decidedly different from Fairport's subsequent output. Instead of the rocked-up covers of traditional U.K. folk tunes they would become famous for, Fairport covered still-unknown North American acts like Joni Mitchell, Jim & Jean, and Emmit Rhodes. And instead of the electrified folk-rock feel they'd soon forge, Fairport here showcase a sound equally informed by the psychedelic sounds emerging from San Francisco at the time.
