Key players in the Krautrock movement, Faust formed in Germany in 1971 and soon built a devoted fanbase thanks to their wildly unpredictable and artsy freeform style. They released four albums between 1971 and 1975, then disappeared into obscurity for two decades before reemerging in the '90s and continuing to perform and record with various changing lineups. Like their contemporaries Can and Neu!, Faust were way too weird to be mainstream stars; it's somewhat shocking they were on a major label for so long. But they were extremely influential to multiple generations of audio outlaws, including Throbbing Gristle, Sonic Youth, Chrome, Lisa Suckdog, and Sun City Girls. This compilation is a mysterious mish-mash of sounds recorded over the course of 30-plus years, chopped up, rearranged, and reconfigured into something that's only consistent in its bizarreness. Tripped-out special effects, distorted power tools, folksy acoustic jams, hand-spliced tape loops, disturbing dialogue clips, jazzy pianos, and cacophonous drone-rock is the order of the day here, best experienced on cuts like "A Seventies Event," "Duo," "Ayi Ayi," and "Nervous."
