Filter is Richard Patrick and a revolving cast of musicians. As long as Patrick holds the reins and puts his Filter cap on, it's going to sound like the band that emerged in the '90s as yet another fine, hard-edged group whose commercial viability would've been unthinkable just a few short years earlier. All these years later, the hooks are brighter and the sounds slightly smoother. Or perhaps our ears have grown accustomed to songs with catchy choruses and obscenities, as the lead-off track, "We Hate It When You Get What You Want," displays so brilliantly. Just the sixth Filter studio album, The Sun Comes Out Tonight may not forge much new ground—though the poppy "Surprise" is unlikely enough to fulfill that goal—but it delivers a hard edge when necessary. Tracks such as "Self-Inflicted," "Burn It," and "Take That Knife Out of My Back" encourage aggressive driving, assertive moshing, and enough heartfelt catharsis to make them essential listens for hard rock fans of any era.
