Gal Costa, a childhood friend of the great Caetano Veloso, rocketed to the head of Brazil’s Tropicalia movement through her spellbinding collaboration with him, Domingo, and her own iconoclastic solo debut. Her self-titled sophomore album features a sound that is a shade more restrained than the psychedelic pyrotechnics of her debut, but it remains a compelling fusion of American rock ‘n’ roll, British psychedelia, and Brazilian rhythms. Though Costa is undoubtedly a virtuosic singer, tracks like the paint-peeling “Sebastiana” prove that Costa was fearless when it came to discarding delicate precision in favor of brute power. As on her debut she is frequently accompanied by both Jorge Ben and Caetano Veloso, who temper Costa’s vocal indulgences with sweetly intoned harmonies. The gently propulsive “Saudosismo” finds Costa revisiting the eastern-tinged sonics of earlier works like “Taureg” while the title track, after an expansive, fuzz-drenched prelude, reveals itself to be a breathtakingly beautiful bossa nova in the traditional style.
