The Gene Autry Show, Vol. 1 is the first of three volumes that together collect all of the music from Autry's early- to mid-'50s television program. The disc begins and ends with the program's theme music, and in between are 36 brief songs and snippets of dialogue lifted directly from first 27 episodes of the show. The Cass County Boys, a Sons of the Pioneers-style Western trio that sometimes appeared on the program, provide occasional backing and enjoy an entertaining solo turn on "Great Grand Dad." Extraneous background noises sometimes intrude, so listeners who are looking for straightforward performances of Western songs should look elsewhere, but fans of Autry (and The Gene Autry Show in particular) will enjoy this revival of vintage television performances.
