Rod Stewart. Paul McCartney. Michael Bublé. Now welcome Eagles guitarist Glenn Frey to the world of standards. His smooth vocals always worked best in the context of his band, where harmonies cemented the tunes and made each member an integral piece of the puzzle. On his own he's solid and laid-back, bringing the right amount of pathos to the piano, woodwinds, and strings of "The Shadow of Your Smile" and "For Sentimental Reasons" managing to sneak in The Beach Boys' "Caroline, No" and Randy Newman's "Same Girl" as rock-era standards. Sonny Til & The Orioles' "It's Too Soon to Know" has been called, in some circles, the first rock 'n' roll song; here it receives a mild reading worthy of a martini. The expanded version includes three additional cuts: "Worried Mind," "The Good Life," and "I Wanna Be Around." They continue the lounge act best evinced by Frey's take on Burt Bacharach's "The Look of Love."
