Appetite for Destruction arrived near the height of the Sunset Strip hair-metal craze. But while Mike Clink's production gave Guns 'N Roses' debut an undeniably commercial sheen, this was a band willing to cop to more vices than just smokin' in the boys' room. Taking their lessons from the Stones and Aerosmith, they produced a howling tumult in praise of their vices ("Mr. Brownstone," "Nightrain") and ready to push the world back a step or two ("Welcome to the Jungle"). The breadth of his band's gift was heard in "Sweet Child o' Mine," an arching rainbow of a love song (to a woman, Erin Everly, Rose would prove unable to keep). For a few years the most popular rock band in the world, GNR's mega-stardom rested mostly on this album.
