As a four-piece synth-rock band now based in Los Angeles, Hands do their adopted city proud. The urban sense of shimmering lights and constant action is replicated by synths and propulsive rhythms ("Kinetic"). "Trouble" works off a pop hook that could drift back to the '80s, with singer Geoff Halliday echoing into the infinite night. "Videolove" expands outward from there. Its melody line allows for grander thoughts, but the reverb and peculiar vocal stylings obscure much of the sentiment—though it's likely things aren't as shiny and happy as the synths imply. "Elegant Road" adds some R&B sway. "The Game Is Changing Us" brings guitars and synths together to color the lines outside of the strictly pulsing bass and drums. "House of Jars" sparks images of goth rockers hiding in shadows on the dance floor. "Lonesome Body" continues the dense party atmospherics but with moments of pause and volume reduction that allow for introspection. "Nothing but Animals" begs for the reverb to be turned down, as there's a lot going on beyond the obvious psychedelic swirl.
