As an artist who emerged at the tail end of the loosely defined slo-core/sadcore era of the early '90s, Hayden had his work cut out for him. With neither the lyrical dexterity of Mark Eitzel nor the prettiness of Ida, the Canadian singer/songwriter needed a way to distinguish his songs. For a time he did so by increasing instrumentation and then by speeding things up. Yet his heart has always been with the spare and the probing. So with 2013's Us Alone—his first album in four years—he recorded much of the music himself, as one song notes, while his daughter slept. At just eight songs, there's a simplicity here that lets listeners focus and feel things so much more, like a lover's betrayal on "Just Give Me a Name." "Blurry Nights" puts together the sound of a small band, with Lou Canon finding the volume knob. The nearly seven-minute album closer "Instructions" captures that strolling Red House Painters vibe while Hayden ruminates on death. A minute of silence follows before he returns to the piano for a hidden track.
