Joan Armatrading has always been an adventurous, restless musician who refuses to settle in with an easy hook and take it to the bank. Her consistent explorations have made it hard for mass audiences to understand what it is she does, while her devoted fans love her for every quirk. And there are plenty of lovable, smart, and heartfelt quirks to this left-of-center, jazz-based album. Make no mistake: it's not a jazz album. It just incorporates certain chords and swings for something nearing jazz rhythms. Actually, it sounds like a jazz album that The Soft Machine's Robert Wyatt would approve of. Armatrading plays all the instruments here and programs the drums to do some pretty unexpected things. "Single Life" begins simply enough before turning inward on itself. "Tell Me" throws '80s-sounding guitars and bass into the mix. "Back on Track" sounds like she's taking on Steely Dan and playing the band's straight man. "I Want That Love" is a compact jazz-pop tune with punctuating electric pianos.
