Opening with a reel of banjo and a pattering drum machine, Fuse showcases Keith Urban's inventive fusion of traditional country and contemporary pop from its first moments. When the opening track, "Somewhere in Your Car," gets to its guitar break—a solo that could have been lifted from '70s classic rock radio—it sets a high-volume, genre-bending precedent for Fuse. As Urban muses on well-tested Nashville inspirations (rebellious cowgirls, country roads, sleepy rural romance), his diverse musical palate reaches for listeners beyond the borders of traditional country. The catchiest tunes ("Love's Poster Child," "She's My 11," "Red Camaro") are driven by huge guitars, streamlined production, and soaring choruses. And yet for all the arena-filling singles that demonstrate Urban's crossover potential, elegant ballads like "Cop Car" and "Come Back to Me" flaunt Urban's charisma with equally winning results.
