This 21-song retrospective affirms the musical diversity that this beloved British songwriter achieved in her all-too-short lifetime. Unlike most retrospectives, The Very Best of Kirsty MacColl is not sequenced chronologically, but that actually works in its favor. The first three tracks alone—“A New England” from 1985 and “Walking Down Madison” and “My Affair,” both from 1991—offer a well-rounded view of a musician who refused to be one-dimensional. MacColl’s style could be ethereal, but she was never lightweight. Even in her most sugary moments, she displayed an intelligence and self-possession rarely seen in pop music performers. Within her array of musical interests, one hears strands of '60s girl groups, traditional British folk music, and the Cuban styles that would become her obsession in the final years of her life. (She was killed in a boating accident at age 41.) Her chart hits trace a stunning maturation, but her consistent wit and integrity bridges the youthful whimsy of 1979’s “They Don’t Know” to the midlife angst of 1991’s “All I Ever Wanted.”
