Ex–Bikini Kill frontwoman Kathleen Hanna here sports an agenda so demanding that the music must also freshen itself at every turn. Second albums are notoriously difficult because artists must evolve beyond their initial energy. Le Tigre’s second album, 2001’s Feminist Sweepstakes, pushes the drum machine up in the mix, while the trio extend their creative reach where most punk bands merely turn up the amps in times of crisis. “Fake French” nearly channels “Hot Stuff” by the Rolling Stones, while “On Guard” uses Poly Styrene–styled shrieks to prove Hanna can’t mellow out. As long as ideas keep her awake, the band know to follow.
