Lori Carson wrote these "meditations" as a complete, interconnected song cycle. Her voice has always been a gentle marvel as it rides the top of her range. With ethereal musical tones, her songs take on an atmosphere of twilight, a hazy feeling of existing somewhere between light consciousness and sleep. She's a struggling romantic, wanting love to answer her needs but knowing that little can solve her own riddles. The title track opens with the grace of Van Morrison or Sigur Rós at their most delicate, each guitar stroke resembling the peeling of an onion layer. Her vocals—and those of Ayako Hirakata—often form wordless intonations. The acoustic guitars beautifully melt into the ambient pieces that are as powerful as anything released by the 4AD label in its prime. "She Can't Decide" could work as a companion piece to Miles Davis' In a Silent Way, so gently rippling are its tones. The extended lengths of several pieces help further present the ambient tone poems.
