Songwriter Carolyn Berk sounds like a one-woman band on I Am the West, joined only by producer Suny Lyons on strings and Josiah McGaughey on additional drums. Otherwise, it's all Berk, overdubbing her own guitars, keyboards, and drums to create pop/rock arrangements in support of a song cycle that traces a love story from beginning to end. In "Igloos for Ojos," the singer encounters a fellow Pisces-rising drunk actor, quickly followed by "a kiss on the neck and chemistry." The chemistry continues, but things gradually get more complicated between the lovers, to the point that the singer confesses that she hasn't been entirely forthcoming in "I Am What I Don't Know," adding, "I am sorry though." Toward the end, she is pleading, "Stay Another Night" and declaring, despite evidence to the contrary, "(This Ain't) The Last Song." Yes, it is, but it seems Berk will live to love again, and meanwhile she's created a modern rock & roll romance deserving of live performance with a band.
