The second release in Marshall Crenshaw’s Kickstarter-funded EP series—where, for each set, the veteran power-popster offers up a new original, a cover, a remake of an old Crenshaw classic, and, digitally, a vintage live track—continues in the tradition of I Don’t See You Laughing Now. “Stranger and Stranger” is 2013 Crenshaw with his deft craftsmanship in full effect. A cover of The Carpenters’ “(They Long to Be) Close to You” fulfills its promise, with Crenshaw letting the melody do the heavy work while he plays it straight. An acoustic version of “Maryanne,” recorded for an unreleased film from 2008 called God Is Dad, shows Crenshaw in a relaxed mood. A 1991 live version of “Better Back Off” is Crenshaw in an agitated mood, rocking at his harder end.
