When San Francisco’s Nicholas Giacomini isn't writing graffiti or teaching yoga with his wife, Amanda, he's most likely performing or recording as MC Yogi. Pilgrimage is an outstanding sophomore album boasting 19 tracks (20 with the bonus version) that seamlessly fuse worldbeat and reggae with hip-hop, electronica, klezmer, jazz, and dance pop—all the while musing on Hindu-based themes. Following a quirky, minute-long intro, “Ganesha (Sound the Horn)” properly sets the tone with a melodic horn section and vintage organ notes looped under MC Yogi rhyming and singing alongside samples of female Indian vocals and groovy sitar-shredding. “Hanuman” drops harder beats and skronky saxophone to blatantly (and brilliantly) recall The Beastie Boys’ “Brass Monkey” as MC Yogi rhymes a narrative about a simian Brahman deity. Some droning harmonium notes help give the Sanskrit-sung “Jai Sita Ram” a mellow, meditative feeling. Similarly, “I Am That” pulses with repetition similar to the mantra rhythms practiced in transcendental meditation. “Give Love” closes with catchy reggae melodies.
