As one of the few alternative rock bands to cross into the mainstream, Australia's Midnight Oil occupied a rare spot in late-'80s music culture. It didn't happen overnight, and for casual fans it was all about the über-catchy "Beds Are Burning" single from the 1987 album Diesels and Dust. However, the band had been making records since 1978 and soldiered on until 2002's Capricornia served as its final studio release. Midnight Oil was hugely popular in its homeland; in the U.S. its success was more mercurial. This chronological collection gives listeners the perfect rough guide to the band's high points and development—the new wave direction of "Run by Night" from its self-titled debut is a world apart from the music near the end of the program. Each album and EP is represented by at least one track. The band's liberal politics often influenced its lyrics, and a sense of fairness and justice inspired its performances.
