The haunting, gorgeous voice of Mina has rarely had a showcase as wonderful as "Summertime," the Gershwin-penned ballad that she croons halfway through this greatest-hits collection. Her voice aches with a brutal sadness that betrays the lyrics, but only accentuates the irony and hidden emotions behind the track. It is this attention to detail that has made Mina one of the most endearing figures in Italian pop music since the '50s, and each song featured here is a wonderful reminder of her remarkable talents. "Io Sono il Vento" might be the most recognizable Italian song she sings; the winding jazz vamp is a tour de force of personality that sums up her sensual sadness in a memorable two-minute gem. She also can jump back and forth from Italian pop to American pop with no problems, and her covers of "Venus," "Personality," and "Be Bop a Lula" are all curious covers of classic pop songs. The other appealing aspect of her sound is her use of a full jazz band, which creates gorgeous soundscapes around her forceful voice. With a strong track listing, excellent production, and exuberant performances, L'oro di Mina is undoubtedly one of the best albums a listener could use to start their introduction to Mina.
