Making the jump to a major label, New Jersey's Monster Magnet ramped up its fidelity and evolved from a scuzzy fuzz-rock group into a powerful stoner rock band. Here, its debts to Hawkwind, Black Sabbath, and The Stooges are repaid with songs that take those influences and transform them into pure anthems. The band's sense of mischief can be heard in the humorous song titles and lyrics. The cover of Willie Dixon's blues classic "Evil" (best known in a version by Howlin' Wolf) is pure brutal funk and boogie. The cover of Hawkwind's "Brainstorm" is even more severe, breaking the eight-minute mark with the feel of a crossfire hurricane. New guitarist Ed Mundell slightly alters the sound away from psychedelia into old-school heavy metal. "Cyclops Revolution" adds stirring guitar solos and forceful riffs. The title track rumbles with an early-'70s groove. "Cage Around the Sun" works from acoustics to an anthemic blast. Leader Dave Wyndorf is a true visionary who understands the importance and power of simple, elemental riffs. He's among the most important creators of stoner/space rock.
