After years spent as a street performer and regular on the downtown arts scene in New York, Moondog sought informal artist’s asylum in Europe in the late ‘70s, where he would more or less remain for the rest of his life. The albums that Moondog had released on Prestige and Epic early in his career had won him a large European following and upon arriving in Germany he was able to marshall resources that had been denied him in America, and subsequently to give voice to more extravagant, though not necessarily more successful, realizations of his musical ambitions. What one hears here is a set of musical ideas that will be familiar to listeners who have already absorbed titles like Moondog and More Moondog, but that sound more labored over and more painstakingly approached than ever before. Much of the first half of In Europe recycles themes and melodies from earlier Moondog albums, but the second half finds him playing pipe organ, which lends his already forbidding compositions an added sense of majesty.
