After releasing just four albums between 1996 and 2009, Myron Walden set off on a two-year recording stint so prolific it would make '70s-era Freddie Hubbard blush — heck, it'd make pre-Tha Carter II Lil Wayne blush. Momentum was the first of seven albums Walden would release between 2009 and 2010. It's a straight-ahead album featuring some of jazz's more underappreciated semi-young musicians, namely Darren Barrett's fiery trumpet and Kendrick Scott's always compelling drum work. David Bryant adds his ambient Fender Rhodes. Walden, who began his playing career on the alto sax, comes into his own on the tenor, sporting a voice that is more and more identifiably his own. There aren't many new ideas on the album, but Momentum is far from stale.
