If you’ve ever read anything about Never Shout Never’s Christopher Drew, comparisons to Justin Bieber invariably surface. But Drew’s second studio album packs a slightly edgier punch than any of Bieber’s recordings to date. Much of this can be attributed to Drew’s penchant for contrasting sunny melodies with profanity-peppered lyrics that bite. “This S**t Getz Old” bobs and sways with a sing-along catchiness that rubs against rhymes lambasting a self-pitying buzz-killer. Similarly, “CheaterCheaterBestFriendEater” shines an unflattering light on an unfaithful ex over a backdrop of breezy ukuleles, playful glockenspiel and tropical percussion. “Lovesick” finds the young bard belittling a muse who toys with his emotions, as whimsical piano notes sway along with handclaps and Drew’s versatile vocal range crooning effortlessly into falsettos. Of course he still specializes in those fawning lyrics as evidenced by the folksy title-track and the endearing “Trampoline.” The Deluxe Version bonus track “Mailbox” is a live fan favorite that finally made it to the studio.
