For the first Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds album not including Mick Harvey, Cave decided to explore the dark, subdued thrills that drive his soundtrack work with Warren Ellis. Cave entered the studio with songs written in notebooks but barely formed. The band colored in the specifics, and veteran Bad Seeds/Grinderman producer Nick Launay filed down the sounds made in La Fabrique, a 19th-century mansion in the south of France. The result is Cave's most low-key and accessible collaboration with The Bad Seeds. Somber blues lurk in the shadows, but the songs build to far more. The album's first single, "We No Who U R," exerts a rationed intensity not far from the beautifully sculpted ballads off The Good Son. "Wide Lovely Eyes" centers on a Fender Rhodes in the background and Cave's monstrous vocal blueprint at the front. "Jubilee Street" adds an instrument with each lap until it fully delivers. "We Real Cool" evokes Gwendolyn Brooks' legendary poem in its title before submitting to Cave's inspired verbiage. Yet another career highpoint.
