Caustic Love is an eclectic effort that pushes Paolo Nutini beyond the classic R&B and soul that has sustained him since his first release. Here, along with a tight band, he sets his gritty, powerhouse voice against a wider palette of textures. He belts it out on the psychedelic rockers “Scream (Funk My Life Up)” and “Cherry Blossom.” He goes sultry and smooth on the slow burners “Let Me Down Easy” and “One Day” and swaggers through some slippery funk on “Fashion” and the New Orleans–flavored “Numpty.” The album reaches its emotional crescendo at the midpoint with the ballad “Better Man” and the impassioned social commentary of “Iron Sky,” which has an intensity that carries the album's second half. To further mix it up, he closes with a stripped-down ballad with a doo-wop feel. And it all sounds rich and earthy, as thick basslines, reverbed guitar, strings, and horns get the full vintage treatment.
