Paul McCartney closed out the '80s with his strongest solo album in years. Collaborating with Elvis Costello helped give the veteran an edge he’d been missing, encouraging him to work harder on lyrics and get tougher with the arrangements. McCartney’s a natural tunesmith and a flawless musician who occasionally loses himself in his overall ease with the situation. But here he’s thrown just far enough out of his comfort zone to make a difference. The vocals are rougher and focused. “My Brave Face” starts things with a solid pop loop. “Rough Ride” kicks off like a muted John Hiatt rocker, with slinky guitars hitched to a bluesy groove and giving way to horns and a simmering tension. The Costello duet on “You Want Her Too” shows off their playful communication. “We Got Married” features an unmistakable solo from Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour. Even without Costello’s help, McCartney retains his fighting form, as “Distractions” and “This One” avoid overindulging his sweeter tendencies.
