Throughout the '80s Paul McCartney scored phenomenally successful hit singles that further established his reputation as his generation’s top pop tunesmith. The Michael Jackson duet “Say Say Say” is beautifully crafted, light-as-air pop-funk. Alongside the amiable wishes of “Pipes of Peace” and the sea-breeze chorale of “Tug of Peace” (the follow-up to his previous album’s “Tug of War”), McCartney is cast as an entertainer with a determination to please his audiences at all costs. With producer George Martin once again in the chair, the two keep the sound smooth and pleasing, relying on keyboards, drum machines, and other modern production conveniences to keep the sounds contemporary. McCartney never tries to be anyone he’s not, and his sincerity enlivens the mood of the conservatively arranged “The Other Me,” “So Bad,” and “Through Our Love.” “Keep Under Cover” forecasts McCartney’s later collaborations with Elvis Costello, as the tune is fresh with the type of melodic and production touches the two would pursue together.
