Recorded within the cozy confines of Webster Hall with a top-notch band during his tour supporting the excellent So Beautiful or So What, Live in New York City is yet another fine concert album from a veteran singer/songwriter who's lost neither his voice nor his inspiration. Four tracks—"Dazzling Blue," "So Beautiful or So What," "Rewrite," and "The Afterlife"—represent his most recent output and keep apace with a time-tested catalog of classic tunes. The sound is full and clear, with audience noise kept to a minimum. Five cuts from Graceland, including the more obscure "That Was Your Mother" and "Crazy Love, Vol. II," bring out the band's rhythmic dexterity. "Hearts and Bones" has firmed up its reputation as one of Simon's major works, with a sensitive, note-perfect performance that highlights his intricate guitar picking. Of course, any live album from Simon could contain twice as many tracks and still not include every hit or essential. However, "Slip Slidin' Away," "The Only Living Boy in New York," and "Still Crazy After All These Years" alone cover the major bases and remind us that great men walk among us.
